How did you first hear about Mind Matters?
I first heard about Mind Matters from my business partner; Neil MacDonald. Neil was working with Rex for some time and I was coming into the business as a new partner. It was the perfect opportunity to get our partnership off on the right foot and get the synergy right from the beginning.
In a way it was also an opportunity for Rex to give his blessings too because he understood the workplace culture and of course Neil’s leadership qualities so it was a matter of continuing to build on what was already working well.
What in particular interested you in their Masterclass Program ?
I was always curious around what makes people successful. It can seem so effortless but there’s a lot of hard work going on in the background.
I’ve always wanted to understand how I could improve and be better at the end of the day and that starts with the right mindset.
What specifically did you feel you needed help with or mentoring around? Ws there a fear or challenge around something that was keeping you up night?
I was becoming a new business partner at Fairway Financial and despite the fact I’ve had success in my life, I wanted to continue my understanding and working on how I could improve more within myself.
I know from personal experience how that has a positive impact on the rest of the group.
As driven people we’re continuously striving to do better than yesterday and I had enough self awareness that sometimes we can get in our own way and I needed to do some work around that.
What was your favourite or maybe you have more than one stand out from engaging in the Mind Matters programs?
It’s quite a bizarre experience because you have these epiphany moments; lots more getting and knowing moments.
Key points for me was Rex saying this program is like peeling back layers of garlic with all its elements and it’s not until you do that you can explore the next part. It’s an ongoing, evolving process where you’re gaining so many insights and new mindset skills.
What about the Breathwork part - how are you finding that?
The breathwork is a relatively new thing for me and we’ve been doing it for a couple of months now. I find it gives me greater clarity and it’s incredibly insightful. It’s like tapping into the subconscious part of the mind/brain. My own personal experience? Powerful stuff!

What does Success Mean to you?
That’s a good one! It has changed but what does success mean to me …. That I’m a good rounded, wholesome individual who’s happy with life. I wake up most mornings happy with life and where I’m at.
I really enjoy the ability I have in my job to help people. It doesn’t feel like a job at all; it’s my life. I never look at the clock to go home but I do know I didn’t just wake up one morning like this. It’s been hard work, trials and tribulations of life but it’s totally worth it. When I say hard work it’s not physical work; it’s taking ownership, control of your own actions and taking responsibility for yourself.
It’s all about enjoying what I do, appreciating how far I’ve come and being excited for what the future holds.
From a business perspective success is being able to be myself, being who I am as a financial planner there's an element of knowledge and expectation and you can fall foul if you’re trying to be someone that you’re not. I don’t just go straight to the numbers; there’s more to it than that for me. Being authentic is such a good feeling.
Running a business profitability is the last thing I’m thinking about when I’m offering guidance and advice because I start with how can I help you, what’s your story, what’s really going on. The reward is that you’ve given someone your support and guidance.
What is life like now in comparasion to then?(the before and after) personally and with your business.
I think it’s like you’re doubling up on all the good stuff you were doing before and I feel like I’m definitely an all-round better person for it.
It’s like chalk and cheese because I’ve had success before but now I really know where my headspace is; what’s working and what’s not.
I can quickly and clearly see when something’s not working and adapt because I have skills and strategies to change course quickly. It involves understanding why it’s happening and then knowing what I can do about it.
I was there with Mind Matters to work with Neil to work on the business but it cannot impact other parts of your life as well in a good way.
It’s a bit like this; you go to the gym to do the physical stuff but it’s just as important to give your mind a good workout too! If the mind is healthy, the rest will follow.
I find that in my business working with my clients if the head space isn’t good you can see it in the numbers. I mean financial pressure can be a top stress in people's life and we need to understand and have empathy around that especially in my role.
What is your personal or professional motto?
The Right Thing To Do is our motto at Fairway Financial and that pretty much sums it up for me professionally and personally too.
It really means you’ll get the right thing to do from us; it’s not about us, it's about you.
What tool/s or ritual that you learnt with Mind Matters do you regularly use and you could not live without now?
Definitely meditation. I’m no expert at it but I know if I don’t meditate on a regular basis I’m out of sync.
I’m an extremely driven person and I can be all go, go go and find it hard to stop so it’s great for someone like me to just be in the moment. If you’d told me before Mind Matters to sit down and meditate I would have said it’s a waste of time but it’s completely the opposite now.
Everything starts with a thought and I still can't comprehend how much of the subconscious and by connecting with it is a great skill set to have. Being able to utilise your own subconscious instead of using the conscious mind is truly powerful stuff.
What would you like your personal legacy to be?
He was out there helping as many people as he could and tried to do his best with what he had with no regrets and enjoying life along the way. I think I can influence others to be more in the moment and enjoy the present more too.How has the Mind Matters Mentoring including the Breath work assisted you?
It’s an ongoing thing. It’s like when you get fit you can’t just stop and eat chocolate cake all day - you have to stick at it. I believe 100% you need a coach who watches your back and helps you out, who teaches you and guides you and who will pick you up. It’s so important because it has a positive impact across your whole life, not just business.
As I said before the breathwork provides such greater clarity and insights it’s incredibly powerful.
What do you enjoy about having your business partner also being on the same page from their work with Mind Matters as well?
It’s the whole team here at Fairway Financial who’s on the same page. Most of our staff have been here 10 years at least so we’re very fortunate to have the staff we do. Business and partnerships are like relationships - you have to feel the love right!
If you don’t have the same values, you're going to struggle.
What are the 3 main things you would say to someone who is not currently working with Mind Matters that you think would enhance their life and business?
- You know in your hear and deep down you want/need to improve and change something: the awarenessUsing breath work to assist us in self-mastery
- The hard stuff is where the gold nuggests are for your success! It's the trials and tribulations because the success is within that, that's where the learnings are. Understanding the value of teams & how to empower not knowing through the engagement of others
- Takes time, focus on things to improve, you might not lose 10kg in one day but it does happen over time.
What would you add about the team and the work at Mind Matters?
The definition of what you can achieve working with Mind Matters is like a great dream but you wake up the next morning living it!
